I have received a few messages in the past couple of weeks, with questions relating to my dual battery setup in my tub. I figure now would be a good time to write up a review on my setup and share my thoughts on the 'Kickass 12V Battery Box'.

Before I jump into the review, I'd like to give you a bit of an idea on how I came about purchasing this product. When I first started doing my research on dual battery systems I had next to no knowledge about them. Wasn't sure what type of setup would suit me and I didn't know what the cost was going to be. I started off doing what most people would do. I used online forums and google!

After burying my head into the computer screen for a week or two and still not being 100% sure on what I wanted, I decided to go to my local 4x4 accessories store and have a chat with the guys there. Most people I talked to on the online forums used your standard dual battery setup. Hardwired in, a few plugs and switches and a smart charger. While I was at the shop I hit them up for a quote on such a setup. After seeing the price of around the $4000 mark, I was a little shocked to say the least. I didn't have that kind of cash to spend at the time. My next thought was maybe I can just buy the gear needed and do the install myself? Being a carpenter by trade, wiring is definitely not a strength of mine so I ruled this option out pretty quickly.

So it was back to the drawing board. While searching online videos for more information one night, I stumbled across the 'Australian Direct 4WD Outdoor' website which had some great in depth videos with all the ins and outs of dual battery systems. This is where I found the Kickass Battery Box, it was the perfect option for me. It would allow me to install it myself, it had the bonus of being a portable system and the price point was a big selling point for me.

Australian Direct 4wd Outdoor have been creating and distributing their 4WD and camping accessories for the past decade, making sure their products can go the distance in the harsh Australian conditions. Their in depth videos on their website really gave me the confidence in purchasing their products. Knowing they fully understand how their products work, helped me know I was making the right decision.

The battery box itself comes with USB connections, 12V sockets, volt meter display and an Anderson plug output, or if you go for the full setup with a DC-DC charger you won't have to worry about draining your main battery. The in-built isolator will put a stop to that and also gives the added solar input with an Anderson plug connection.

Australian Direct 4wd Outdoor give plenty of options to suit everyone. You can buy the box on it's own if you already have your own battery. It can be purchased with wiring kits for simple plug and play installations, there is even kits that include solar panels and 240V Battery Chargers.

For what I needed out of my dual battery setup I chose the battery box with DC-DC charger, the 120AH Kickass battery to suit the box and a wiring kit. The install was as easy as they come. Simply fit the supplied battery terminal cables to the main battery, run the cabling to where the battery box will be mounted while keeping the cable up and out of harms way if your running it underneath your vehicle. In my case I followed the chassis rail underneath while keeping the cable on top of the chassis rail and then up into the tub area. Next connect the cable to the supplied Anderson plug, plug into the input connection on the battery box and your away.

I have my battery box semi permanently mounted beside my rear drawer setup, still allowing me access to all plugs along the front face of the box. The main job for my dual battery is to run my Waeco fridge, but it also keeps camp well lit with strip lighting and also charges phones, camera batteries etc.

After nearly 3 years of punishment in the back tub area the battery box setup has never let me down. It is well constructed and all the wiring and components supplied are top notch. The 25 AMP DC-DC charger works extremely well and I have never once been short on power. The simple plug and play style of this setup is a real winner for me, simple but very effective. So for around the $1000 mark, you can be fully setup for power while out camping and also the option to transfer your battery box between vehicles. Saving the cost of getting a dual battery setup again should you sell your pride and joy.

I highly recommend the Kickass 12V Battery Box range by Australian Direct 4wd Outdoor. So if your in the market for a dual battery setup, give these guys a look before you make your decision.

I'd also like to add that I am not sponsored or affiliated with Australian Direct 4WD Outdoor in anyway. This is just my own experience and thoughts on their product.

About Me

I'm an avid lover of the outdoors. Whether it's a quick overnight camp somewhere close to home or something a little longer, a hike through a state forest with the dogs or a day out on the tracks with some mates having a crack in our 4 wheel drives. This is what i enjoy most.

I also enjoy sharing my adventures on social media. I'm no photographer, certainly not a writer by any stretch, but i'm willing to give it a go.

Hopefully you enjoy some of what i put together.

Cheers.

Josh
